Troop 1569 Community Service (from the May '09 newsletter)
This past April has been very exciting for Troop 1569. They participated in two community service projects and learned about a women business owner in their community.

The first community service project was a trash clean up at Villago Park in Casa Grande. The girls cleaned up as much trash as possible, and whoever had the most after 20 minutes earned a Brownie Girl Scout Groovy Girl doll. The girls filled up a curb side trash can up with their collected trash!

The second community service project was another impromptu trash clean-up. The troop went to visit the Rural Metro Fire Department but the fire department was called out to a very bad accident. Instead of calling the meeting off, the troop decided to help out the fire department and collected trash from around the property. They went over fire safety and how important it is to keep trash and clutter free from walk ways.

This troop has also been learning about careers of women in the community. The owner of Casa Grande Candle Co. came in and talked to the troop about why she started her business with her daughter. She taught the troop how to make a no-melt wax candle. The troop had a blast filling their jars with bright colored, yummy smelling crystals.
Take Back the Night (from the May '09 newsletter)
Teens from PPEP tec High School and Partnership High School took action in the community in April at Take Back the Night, a youth planned rally against violence. The Girl Scout booth encouraged youth to design their own advocate T-shirt and it was the busiest booth at the rally!
Daisies Show Kindness at Ben’s Bells
On Saturday, January 17, 2009 , seven members of Daisy Troop 475 made thier way to Ben’s Bells to help create “Ben’s Bells.” The troop learned how to make beads out of clay. The organization fires them, paints them and creates their beautiful bells to present to people around Arizona. Ben’s Bells recognizes people who go out of their way to show kindness to each other. The girls demonstrated how to be Friendly and Helpful as well as Considerate and Caring all while making beads for Ben’s Bells! The troop loved getting dirty for a good cause!

In December the girls earned their Ms. Presidents patch with Council woman Nina Trasoff and invited her to their 3rd Annual PJ & Bear Tea Party. These Brownies ended ‘08 with a rededication ceremony and Christmas Party bash! Thanks to all our parents and volunteers who make all this possible!

Daisy Troop 645 Helps the Humane Society
Not many would expect a small group of young girls to be able to accumulate such a large amount of donations for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, but that’s exactly what Daisy Troop 645 did. The Daisies began their donation drive by brainstorming and decided on the Humane Society. “We can always help the animals,” said Madison Williams. They invited speakers from the Humane Society to talk to them. “We had to collect stuff so we could have lots for the animals,” said Mary Ruiz. The girls decorated donation boxes and delivered them to the Council and Borton and Lineweaver Elementary Schools. In December the troop took a tour of the Humane Society and dropped off more donations than they could carry.

The donations help animals in the shelter and foster families. For information on helping the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, visit www.hssaz.org.

The service unit has participated in both the Casa Grande and Arizona City Electric Light Parades for a number of years and this was their first award from Arizona City and their second award overall. The float was made of recyclables in an effort to encourage more citizens to “Go Green.” There were dozens of light-filled milk jugs and water bottles. On the back and front of the float were light-surrounded cereal and pizza boxes, plastic food containers and any other recyclables the girls could get their hands on. The title of the float was “Girl Scouts, Go Green”, and it was posted on one side of the float. The other side stated, “Girl Scouts have always been green.”

Girl Scout’s Essay to be Published in Discovery Girls Magazine
Arriana Jones, from troop 719, spent part of this past summer writing and completing a 10-page essay questionnaire for Discovery Girls magazine. She answered questions about her career plans, how she deals with peer pressure, and her community service involvement. Her essay was selected from thousands submitted and she will be one of 12 girls to represent Arizona preteens in the Arizona Issue of Discovery Girls magazine.

Arriana is a sixth grader at Toltec Middle School and divides her time between Girl Scouts, ballet lessons and playing the clarinet. She enjoys track and field and has performed in the Children’s Theatre for three summers. Arriana is an honor student and plans to be scientist or a zoologist.

The goal of Discovery Girls magazine is to create a forum for girls to express themselves. The Discovery Girls Arizona issue will be released in June 2009.

Girl Scout Gives to Locks of Love
Celeste, a Girl Scout from troop 1045 in Pusch Ridge, was inspired by her troop’s co-leader Maureen (Mike) Bradley. This past spring Mike was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has been an active Girl Scout and leader for over 20 years! Mike continued working with the troop and finished up the school year leading the girls with her chemotherapy, and consequently radiation therapy. Mike suffered the normal sickness with the chemo, and as a result lost all her hair. Celeste came across the organization “Locks of Love” (http://locksoflove.org), which makes wigs for children that have suffered hair loss from an autoimmune disease, cancer, victims of trauma and rare dermatological conditions. Mike is recovering well, and will continue on this year as a co-leader.
