Girl
Scout's Essay to be
Published in Discovery Girls
Magazine
Arriana Jones, from
troop 719, spent part of
this past summer writing and
completing a 10-page essay
questionnaire for Discovery
Girls magazine. She answered
questions about her career
plans, how she deals with
peer pressure, and her
community service
involvement. Her essay was
selected from thousands
submitted and she will be
one of 12 girls to represent
Arizona preteens in the
Arizona Issue of Discovery
Girls magazine.
Arriana is a sixth grader at
Toltec Middle School and
divides her time between
Girl Scouts, ballet lessons
and playing the clarinet.
She enjoys track and field
and has performed in the
Children's Theatre for three
summers. Arriana is an honor
student and plans to be
scientist or a zoologist.
The goal of Discovery Girls
magazine is to create a
forum for girls to express
themselves. The Discovery
Girls Arizona issue will be
released in June 2009.
Girl Scout Troop 1911,
September 11 Remembrance Day
Brownie Troop 1911 from
Painted Sky Elementary
School (Pusch Ridge Service
Unit) planned a day to drop
off gift baskets to the Oro
Valley Fire Station on
Woodbourne and the Oro
Valley Police Station to
thank them for their
contributions and sacrifices
they make every day. At the
same time, Troop 1911 was
also honoring those killed
in the 9/11 attacks and the
nation's veterans, past and
present.

2008 Girl
Scout National Convention Notes
By Meta J. Everett, Delegate to the
2008 Girl Scout National Council
Session/51st Convention
|
Girl Scouts Can Lead
Anywhere...
This is the new tag line
for the next Girl Scout Triennium,
and is well representative of the
2008 Girl Scout National Council
Session/51st Convention, held in
Indianapolis, Indiana from October
30 through November 2, 2008.
Awesome, incredible and impressive
are the words to describe the
convention. I feel so privileged to
have been a part of this energetic,
ground-breaking event. Young girls
were everywhere, leading the way as
the convention events unfolded.
Thursday evening we were entertained
by the Central Indiana Girl Scouts.
Ribbons in hand, they danced, they
sang and they performed by the
hundreds. The stage was set, and
Friday morning we opened with the
Stewardship Report and Treasurer's
Report. I am happy to say that
National is on track to complete the
Five Deliverables, as promised. We
were then on to the proposals:
Delegates were diligently debating
the standing rules and consent
agenda items. The democratic process
was definitely at work and it was
apparent that councils adjusting to
the realignment process were
passionate about maintaining the
verbiage "local" as part of our
Constitution. Young and old
delegates stepped up to the
microphones and were eloquent in
ensuring that their voices were
heard. We weren't sure if the
balance of the day's proposals would
go forward. After relentless debate
and amendments, however, we were
finally able to conclude, allowing
the incredible projects to be
presented by our "Young Women of
Distinction." I was truly impressed
by the caliber of these young women
as well as their Gold projects; a
true reflection that Girl Scouting
is alive and well, and meaningful in
the 21st century.
Saturday morning we got back to work
and completed the task at hand. Most
of us thought that we would spend
countless hours debating the dues
increase proposal and the new
delegate formula; however, after
careful-but not so
long-consideration, it was apparent
that a dues increase is essential to
the Movement and to allow National
to continue their core business
strategies as promised. These are
hard economic times for everyone
involved and we all have a task
before us to find ways to keep the
Movement growing and moving forward.
The same applied to the reduction of
delegates which will create a more
proportionate representation within
our states and newly formed
councils.
Sunday morning was ceremonious and
blessed with two remarkable keynote
speakers: Geena Davis and Marie C.
Wilson. Geena Davis has created the
Institute on Gender in Media, which
addresses the inequalities of the
female to male ratio and female
stereotyping within film, TV and
other media for children ages 11 and
under. I was most impressed with
Marie Wilson. Marie gave one of the
most genuine and uplifting keynote
speeches I have ever heard. Marie is
the founder of the White House
Project and co-creator of Take our
Daughters and Sons to Work Day. She
currently is working on projects to
expand women leadership within and
outside of the political arena. We
then inducted the new Board of
Directors and Nominating Committee
and heard an exhilarating incoming
speech from our new President,
Connie Lindsey.
I find myself looking forward to
being involved with the Girl Scout
Movement and continuing education to
deliver meaningful programs and
support our young women-our up and
coming leaders of the world. These
are critical and essential times
just shy of the one hundredth
anniversary of Juliette Gordon Low's
dream of voice and equality for
girls and women around the world,
and I believe, a dream that is
coming true.
Thank you for giving me the honor of
representing the leaders and, most
importantly, the girls of Sahuaro
Girl Scout Council. |
